happy 19th birthday card | tutorial

This past weekend my beautiful daughter celebrated her 19th Birthday! In honor of my baby girl, I bring you a colorful and fun birthday card tutorial. For today’s tutorial, I am using the Fancy Frame Flip-its die with matching Fancy Frame Framelits, both designed by Stephanie Barnard.

Start by cutting a piece of cardstock using the Sizzix Fancy Frame Flip-its die. Fold the flip-it over at the second crease and while the card is “closed,” fold the top crease back again. The finished fold will be mountain (on the left) and then valley (on the right).

Cut two pieces of patterned paper to decorate your card. The piece for the left hand side of your card will be approximately 2-1/4” x 4-3/4” and the piece for the right hand side will be approximately 3-1/4” x 4-3/4”. Lay them right side down and center them with the edge of the die and the crease marks as shown. Make sure not to overlap the crease. Run through your Big Shot machine.

3-adhereAfter your pieces are cut, flip them over and glue them down onto your card front. Add the pieces with your card laying flat using the cut Fancy Frame Flip-its portion as a guide, make sure not to overlap that portion.

Use the two smallest sizes from the Fancy Labels Framelits set to create a backing piece and a spot to put your sentiments for both the front and back of the Flip-its card. Basically, the larger piece is meant to frame the smaller piece.

Adhere the larger piece to the center portion of your Flip-Its die and then add the smaller piece for the sentiment on top of that. Outline smaller piece using black pen. Stamp “happy birthday” onto light cardstock, cut each word out, and outline them. Use your Word Play die create the number 19 (or whatever number you need for your recipient!) and glue down the number. Add your happy birthday sentiment into center of your Flip-its card as shown and then stamp the “th.” Outline left and right patterned paper pieces on card.

Use the Scallops On The Edge Die to create a thin decorative strip to place on the right hand side of your card. I added the paper right side down to cut.

Add the decorative strip you created to the right hand side of your card and outline.

Adhere the larger and small pieces within the center portion of your Flip-Its die as you did before. Outline smaller piece with black pen. Stamp sentiment and then add a star that you’ve outline with black above your sentiment. I created the star using the Sizzix Stars Framelits set.

To make the card a bit more personal, I stamped my daughters name. I did this with the flip-its closed so I could get the placement I wanted since I wanted it to be visible before fully opened.

Tie a piece of twine on the right hand side overlapping your border and wa-la! you’re done!

When you pull the left and right side of the card, it literally flips open. Pretty cool huh?

I think this is the first birthday my daughter has had where we haven’t all been together to celebrate. She’s off at college so it’s a whole new ballgame now. That whole, “they grow up to fast” saying is so very true.

Hope you had a great birthday baby girl! We love you and miss you!
