2010: a year in review layout

I’ve got a layout to share today, it will be the cover page for my 2010 album. I created a similar page for my 2009 album and loved how it turned out so I figured I’d stick with what was familiar and do it again. I think even though the two are similar, they are very different.

2010-cover-page

I’m so happy that I went with the choice of white for the title. I really wanted the photos to stand out and any color title was detracting from them. I think the white on white is really nice. Also, I created the photo collage using Picasa, no way I’d cut and glue all those photos, lol!

Supplies: white cardstock (Bazzill), Tickled Pink “Delighted” Paper (Fine and Dandy, My Mind’s Eye), Daiquiri Thickers (American Crafts), black pen (0.1 and 0.5, American Crafts), software for collage (Picasa).

Other Stuff

My kids only have a few more days of school left and then summer officially starts. I’ve got Third Grade Awards to attend today plus some running around. Looking at my schedule, it seems like I’ve got some running around to do just about everyday. How does that happen? I think I’m going to have to schedule some time to get crafty to help keep my sanity. :-)

Happy Tuesday!

a smashing story (otherwise known as Karen Burniston is an amazing friend!)

I’ve been scrapbooking a long time and it’s been a while since a product has come out that I’ve had a huge sense of urgency to buy. And then I saw a video for a Smash book

After that, it was all over. I knew it had to be mine. I heard they were at Archiver’s and I was there on Saturday right when they opened ready to push anyone out of my way who might have been in the aisle (joking! joking!). I had a hard time deciding between the Retro and Doodle books so I carried them both in my basket while I loaded up on the majority of accessories they had in stock. I was texting Karen, telling her I wished she was there to help me decide and to rein me in.

[here’s where the smashing story starts… “smashing.” see what I did there?]

my Archiver's basketI took forever at the store. Karen texted me back and asked what I had decided, my reply was that I was still there, debating. I finally decided on Retro and am checking out. I’m chatting with the lady at the check out when another employees comes over, hands me a gift certificate, and says “this is from Karen.” I’m sure a look of confusion was on my face and I let out a barely audible “what?” as I opened the little card. It was a special thank you from her. The girl that took the order said that Karen told her that I should get both because I deserved both. Wow! I was floored!

I swear to you the lady that was checking me out, myself, and the lady behind me in line all got teary eyed. Seriously, that the sweetest thing EVER! Talk about making someone feel extra special! My check out lady actually asked to call Karen because she thought it was so nice.

Karen is pretty awesome. Not only is she an amazing crafter and a genius at designing pop-ups, she’s also an all around genuinely nice person. When she moved here from Colorado – a mere 8 minutes from me – I felt like I was truly blessed. She has become my a true friend, a confident, a sounding board, she inspires me to be better. We have so much in common and have such a good time together, I’m a better person for knowing her. She’s also pretty darn hilarious and I love sarcastic humor so we get along great in that area too! We could take all the crafting out of the equation and I’d still be friends with her. The fact that she’s a crafter and we have that in common too, that’s just icing on the cake!

Needless to say, I got both Smash books plus a ton of extras.

Like I said, Karen is amazing. She’s on twitter if you want to follow her, on Facebook, has cool videos on YouTube, and has an awesome blog. Check her out, tell her I said hi, and soak in some of her creativity.

Karen – thank you for being the kind hearted (and humorously snarky on occasion) person that you are. You rock! (and if friend were flowers, I’d pick you. ha!)

Have a wonderful Sunday!

lo: January picnic

january-picnic

A layout! Can you believe it? I love making cards but I was starting to miss actual scrapbooking! I did this layout relatively quick (in my world that means under an hour). I pretty much went with the “I’m just going with it” mantra. You know, when you think, that looks pretty decent there, and just glue it down and go with it. Sometimes not overthinking it is very refreshing.

To view each page individually, click the left or right side and the image will open in a new page:

Supplies: kraft cardstock (Bazzill), Daiquiri Thickers (American Crafts), journal stamps (lines2journal, The Stamps of Life), Verbiage and Hoopla patterned paper (Ad Lib, Bo Bunny’s Back to Backs), corner rounder (Paper Shapers, EK Success), Black pen (0.5, American Crafts), buttons (from my stash).

Have a wonderful weekend! Hope you’re able to find some time to get crafty. :-)

sending you warm wishes card

sending-you-warm-wishes

This card is the last of the sample’s I made for Karen. It uses the Crown, Medallion, & Scrolls set. It’s such an elegant set! I’m really happy with how this card turned out. Someone else must have been pretty happy with it too because Karen took all my samples with her to teach in Minnesota this past weekend and it mysteriously disappeared in the hands of an admirer. I guess I’ll take that as a compliment, someone liked my card enough that they took off with it. :-)

I’m loving all the new Sizzlit sets and am happy I got to chance to make something with them. I hope you enjoyed them too.

Supplies: Crown, Medallion, & Scrolls set (Sizzlits, Sizzix), Threading Water Border Punch (Fiskars), stamp sentiment (Made With Love set, Hero Arts), Basic Pearls (Jewels, Stampin’ Up), decorative chalks, all papers from my stash.

Have a great Friday! Enjoy your weekend!

if friends were flowers card

if-friends-were-flowers

Just like yesterday, this card features the Butterfly, Flower, & Swirl Sizzlit set, this time showing off the flower and swirl. I love the swirl, it’s the perfect size! The flower has little score marks in it so if you want to bend them to give them some depth you can.

Supplies: Butterfly, Flower, & Swirl set (Sizzlits, Sizzix), stamped sentiment (Hello Friend, Lawn Fawn), patterned paper (Blossom Soup, Jillibean Soup), Pumpkin Pie dye ink (Stampin’ Up), white and green cardstock (Bazzill).

In Other News

Friday night went off without a hitch! My newly 16 year old son had an awesome time. On Saturday I started editing photos to order, I didn’t realize I was so behind! As soon as this month is over I’ll be sending Shutterfly three months worth. Normally I edit, upload, and order one month so I’m not sure how I got so off track. I’ll be getting back tons of scrap worthy photos… can’t wait!

Thanks for stopping by! More samples coming on Thursday and Friday. :-)

You’re Invited card

celebrate-invite

In honor of my oldest sons 16th birthday – which is today – I made a 5” x 7” birthday invitation card using the Celebrate setanother example of one of Karen’s new dies. It does not open, what you see is what you get. I just love the little 3-D balloon. I added some pop dots underneath to really make it stand out.

Supplies: Celebrate Set (Sizzlits, Sizzix), cardstock (Bazzill), patterned paper from my stash, pop dots, Word.

Tonight my house will be invaded by teenage boys. Pizza will be consumed. Video games will be played. A pop can pyramid will be constructed. Little sleep will be had. Wish me luck!

Staying Connected news

I finally added the “Google Friend Connect” follow button to my blog. I also added a “follow by email” option for those that prefer updates sent to their inbox. I’ve had the “subscribe to” drop down menus for a while but figured it was about time I added the others. Just scroll down and you’ll find them on the left hand side of the page. Hope this helps! :-)

More tomorrow (hopefully!)…

I love YOU! mini card

i-love-you-mini

Don’t you love it when things get busy, when life gets in the way, and you realize your blog is in serious need of some love? So there, right now. I’ve been busy making samples using Karen’s new Sizzlit die sets. They are the Celebrate set, the Butterfly, Flower, and Swirl set and the Crown, Medallion, and Scrolls set. I’ve finally got them all photographed and uploaded so I’m ready to share. Today I’m using the Celebrate set but will be sharing the others in the days to come.

Supplies: Celebrate Set (Sizzlets, Sizzix), “I love you” (Banners4all, The Stamps of Life), cardstock (Bazzill), patterned paper (my stash), black pen, black ink.

Between making samples, Prom for my daughter, and the awards ceremony’s the big kids have already had, I’ve been plenty busy. It’s that time of year. It’s always before school starts, before Christmas, and before school ends that seems to be my busiest time of year. Is it June 2nd yet? And tonight… the final Orchestra concert of the year.

More soon… :-)

take a break card

Oh for the love of coffee! How could I not like this stamp set? So, so cute! This stamp set is from The Stamps of Life. They’re a great quality stamp, ink up well, and there are quite a few images and sayings on one set… definitely a lot of bang for your buck. I also got to use one of Karen’s awesome dies, the Scallop Circle 3-D Pop-Up die. This die and the Zig-Zag 3-D Pop-Up are my new favorites because they are so versatile (and easy!).
