Altered Christmas Coasters

These fun tiles are easy to create and make great gifts! They are easily adaptable too, just change out the napkin to a different season or theme and you're good to go!

Supplies needed:
  • Four 4” x 4” tumbled stone tiles (why? because they are more forgiving than smooth tiles)
  • One to two decorative napkins (approximately 5” x 5” folded)
  • Decoupage
  • Flat paintbrush
  • Toothpicks or shot glasses
  • Spray Sealer (like Krylon Acrylic Crystal Clear)
  • Felt or Crafters Foam (for bottom of tiles)
  • Scissors
  • Craft Knife
  • Craft mat
  • Bone Folder
  • Wet paper towel

Directions:

1. Cut one decorative napkin into four different sections.

  • In the corner on one of mine, the words “all rights reserved” were printed so I cut another section out of an extra napkin.
  • If you want, you can trim the napkin down so it fits the face of your tile plus ¼” extra on each of the four sides.

2. Coat top of tile and sides with decoupage.

3. Gently lay one of your napkin pieces on top of the tile, centering it as best as you can.

  • Most likely you will not be able to pick up your napkin without ruining it so if you need to move it a bit, gently pull the edges in the direction you want the napkin to go.

4. Once the napkin is where you want it, use your fingers to smooth it out on the top of the tile and around the edges.

5. Carefully pick tile up. Use your wet paper towel to clean up your work surface if you need to.

6. Apply another layer of decoupage to the top and sides of the napkin.

  • You can leave the excess hanging from the tile (if you chose not to trim the napkin) and cut it off later - this is what I did. Or-
  • You can add some decoupage to the underside of the tile and then press the napkin down using more decoupage. If you add the decoupage to the underside, make sure you set the tile something like a shot glass to make sure it doesn’t glue itself to the surface it is drying on.

7. Set tiles on toothpicks (or shot glass) to dry.

  • You might need to go back and press the sides of your napkin down if they’ve flipped up.
  • I like to set projects that need to dry on an old cookie sheet so I can move them to a different location and not take up space on my workstation.

8. Wait about an hour for your project to dry… wait longer if you still see the decoupage.

9. Trim excess napkin away from tile if you need to. Hold the tile on its side and use a craft knife to cut the unwanted portions away.

10. Add a second coat of decoupage to top and sides of tile (and underneath if you went that route). 11. Let dry for about an hour or until no decoupage is visible.

12. Take tiles outside and spray with a sealer. Use one or two coats, follow directions on container. Let dry again.

13. Cut felt pieces (which is what I used) or craft foam to fit on the backside of your tile… you don’t want to scratch up any tables. Glue felt or foam to back of tile using decoupage, use a bone folder to press to the back of the tile. Let dry.

  • I cut my felt a bit bigger and rounded the corners with scissors to cover as much of the surface as possible. You could easily just cut the pieces smaller and skip the rounding part if you wanted to.
  • I use a bone folder to press the felt down because I’ve been known to get carried away in the decoupage department and I’d rather the glue get on the bone folder than my fingers.

14. Ta! Da! You are done! Wait at least 24 hours before you stack them up and wrap them pretty with ribbon!

Have a wonderful week!

happy link day

stuff I like and wanted to share! :-)

Maybe I should make everyday link Sunday? naa… as soon as I commit to that, then it wouldn’t happen, lol!

I had a decent week, got a lot done, still a lot more to do… such is the life around the holidays right? I am hoping to be done with all our Christmas shopping (that has to be mailed!) by the end of the week in hopes that everything will arrive at its destination on time. I need to finish up my BPS stuff too, that’s definitely on my list! that’s about it in my world. :-)

Here is to a very productive week! Have a good one!!!

gotta love excellent customer service

I had emailed scstamp.com with a question about my order – I realized I had made a small mistake and wanted to see if I could have it fixed if the stamp hadn’t been created yet. A nice woman called me a little while later and said my stamp had been made and sent but they would be happy to send me a new stamp, with the correction, free of charge! About 5 minutes later the phone rang, it was the woman from scstamp.com again. She said she went to put in my new order with the typesetters and they told her they had already caught my mistake and fixed it so the one that was sent to me would be exactly how I wanted it. so awesome! gotta love excellent customer service!

My stamp came today and I *love* it!!! I think I have stamped all over every loose piece of paper in my reach! My kids think I’m dorking out! I am… a bit… but that’s okay because it is really cute!!! :-)

Have a great weekend!

a few links and everyday babble

the links

the everyday babble
We had a nice Thanksgiving… it was just us but sometimes that isn’t so bad. No running around and no real schedule to keep. It was a wonderful day! The Friday after I was anxious to decorate the house and actually managed to get three huge boxes out of the attic by myself. Please understand this is a huge feet and I obviously was a woman obsessed because me and high places, we aren’t too friendly! I was, however, determined and the man and daughter were working on a project in the garage… and well I got impatient!!! I have already changed something. Drew freaked out because his stocking said “Andrew” and not “Drew” so I made him a new one.

I’m working on our Christmas cards – I totally cheated this year. The majority will be the store bought kind where you put a 4x6 photo in the middle. Last year I planned to make cards… let’s just say that it was a good idea in theory, lol! If my memory is right, I don’t even think I ended up sending out cards.

Starting tomorrow, I will be setting aside some time to work on some things for Big Picture Scrapbooking. I have been having a hard time focusing on scrapbook related things when my mind is in the land of holidays… when the New Year comes around, it will definitely be one of my top priorities. I’ve got two ideas rolling around in my head – just need to get them down on paper.

That’s all I got! I should really start jotting down the links I want to share… I always think I’ll remember them and never do. next time…

Have a great week!

a few links to share

Other Stuff
I think I’ve pretty much been sick for the past two weeks or so. I came back from San Antonio sick, got better, got sick again and went back to the doctor on Thursday… once again I am amongst the living… I just hope this second round of meds work better than the first round because I am really sick of being sick! Sinus infections suck!

Here’s to a wonderful Thanksgiving and staying healthy!

my lss is closing

I am sorry to say that my local scrapbook store, Maridawn's Scrapbooking, is closing. I can't even begin to explain how sad this makes me... for so many reasons. Not only is the store 5 minutes from my house and always full of new stuff (that I love to buy!) but the people there are my friends and have become a big part of my life. I don't even know what else to say.

I'm really going to miss it.

Roundup recap

This past weekend in San Antonio was incredible! Meeting the other Fiskateer "Nifty Fifty" at the Roundup was really an inspiring experience. It was so fun to put faces to names and really get to know people. My roommate was Maya Oren-Dahan (who is an absolute sweetheart!). I spent some time getting to know Lisa Pace, Jane Hasty, Patti Church, and Kimberly Brock as well – they are truly amazing women! I met a ton of others too but everything is starting to get jumbled in my head and I can’t seem to keep people straight! Meeting the lead Fiskateers was awesome too… Stephenie, Cheryl, and Holly are wonderful – I’m just sorry that May couldn’t have been there. It was such a well run and organized event… Heidi Grace from Heidi Grace Designs and Nancy from Cloud 9 where there too. I can’t begin to say enough good things about this event! On that note, my next task is to train 20 people that would like to become Fiskars Demonstrators.

The only bad thing about my trip was that on Saturday I started feeling a bit stuffy… by Sunday I was very stuffy and not at all myself. The flight home didn’t help and come Monday morning, I was out! I was in bed all day and on Tuesday, Kevin (my wonderful husband who did a terrific job playing Mr. Mom!) took me to the doctor. I had a full blown, very nasty, sinus infection! yuck! Yesterday was the first day that I felt normal enough to leave the house. I think I did too much because today I am completely exhausted and have tossed my “to do” list in the trash!!!

Have a great weekend!

7 random things tag

I've been tagged by Shawnna and Jaqui. :-)

Here are the rules which must be posted on your blog if you are tagged: 1. Link to your tagger and post these rules.2. Share 7 facts about yourself: some random, some weird.3. Tag 7 people at the end of your post and list their names (linking to them).4. Let them know they've been tagged by leaving a comment at their blogs.

My random things...

1. I'm not a big fan of chocolate but I'll eat it occasionally.
2. I hate to clothes shop (which I actually need to do now and am dreading it!).
3. Bacardi and Diet Coke is my favorite adult drink.
4. Fall is my favorite season.
5. I love to read celebrity gossip like PerezHilton.com and TMZ.
6. I wore braces twice.
7. I love to organize (I thrive on it really, clutter makes me crazy!).

I tag: Jana, Chasity, Rhona, Greta, Alicia, Susan, and You (because everyone should get to play!!!).

Other random stuff
The boys have been sick which made for a long week. Everyone is better now thank goodness! My tags for the Fiskateers Roundup are done. Now I just need to get everything else organized - my flight is a week from today! I guess even though I like to organize I can be a bit of a procrastinator! lol! I'm excited about Halloween coming and having Drew parade around in his costume (I'll post the pics after the event). The weather here has finally cooled and we've been enjoying some really nice afternoons - of course at night it's freezing (to us!) but I'll take any type of cool weather I can get. :-)

Enjoy your weekend!

quick update

Thank you so much to everyone who commented on my new scrapbook room! I really appreciate it! I’m enjoying the space… though I think it might already need some tweaking! :-)

I didn’t mean to go into blogging hiatus, it just kind of happened. As soon as I made my last post, I started on a SpongeBob costume for my youngest that will be for Halloween and it was my main focus for a week or so… and the “who lives in a pineapple under the sea” song has been stuck in my head ever since! Next on my list that has kept me busy are tags that I am currently working on for a swap. At the beginning of November I am going to San Antonio for the Fiskateers RoundupI’m pretty excited about that – the tags will be exchanged with the others that were chosen to go!

Okay – that doesn’t sound like a lot but I have been busy, lol! My days tend to disappear and I’m not sure from what but I know I’m exhausted by the end of the day!

Happy Thursday!

my new scrapbook room

My new scrapbook room! Everything is pretty much done except for three photos (that go underneath the flower picture) and some basic decorating so I thought I'd share. This is the view from the front room. The light fixture will eventually be gone and be replaced by a fan/light combo. Most of my pieces are mismatched but I don't care, it works for me! :-)

The majority of my stuff is in a nook to the left of my desks. I like that it is kind of tucked away. I tried to label everything as best as I could so you can see how I have stored things. I didn't take any close ups of my color drawers because I think those are pretty self explanatory... I love storing my embellishments this way, it makes everything easy to find.

I try to keep a lot of things in groups/zones, for me it's a big time saver.

I normally pull my scrap drawer out when I am working and set it on one of my desks. When it gets to full to open, I clean it out and throw a lot of smaller pieces or pieces that have been in there for a long time away.

When we bought the house, we knew we'd never use a formal dining room so we decided this area would be my scrapbook room. I like that it's close enough to everyone that I can still hear what is going on but it's seperate enough that I feel like I have some privacy and a place just for me.

I usually stand when I am working so my desk is counter height. I have a second work place for when I do want to sit or for things that might get pulled out - like my color drawers. My "stuff to alter" storage is missing a shelf, which is why there is still stuff loaded in the Shiner box and looks like a mess! I forgot to label it but my sewing machine is going to be stored underneath the open space of my desk.

I tried to keep certain things in zones so I would be able to get to them easier. My Quickutzs are in a drawer in front of my Revolution. I bought Magpie tins and put my alphabets in there so they'd fit in the drawer. The black magnetic folder contains my cookie cutter shapes and a smaller alpha set.
My desktop... my husband made me the wooden shelving unit. This space will always be in flux. It's normally where I set new purchases to remind me to use them and items I use often. You can also see a bit of the photos that still need to be hung on the wall. I use beans in the metal canisters to keep the pens, adhesives, and scissors standing up.

More zones... I wanted to keep all of my Epson print packs in front of the printer so it would be easy to access. The same goes for my stamps, I have everything grouped together as best as possible. I think the misc. drawer will be in flux too, I'm not sure what I want to store in there yet (or what makes sense to keep in there).

This sits on the floor to the right of my desk. Honestly, I didn't know where else to put them. I'm so used to my ribbon being stored by color in bags I wanted to keep it that way while I was getting back into the swing of things. The ribbon bagss will eventually go into a basket with a handle that can be moved to a desk for easier use.

For as nice and organized as I think I have it, it's not perfect (but what is right?). I thought I'd add a bit of my reality from the move...

I think I'll officially call this zone, the crap zone! :-) Eventually it will have a pool table in it (that's my husbands deal) but for now - it's a mess!

And this is my new scrapbook room! It's so nice to have a place just for me after being so packed in at the other house.

I love it!

Daily Dose - Photo Day 30

Me! :-)

Creativity: A Daily Dose
I can't believe this is the last official class day. I've enjoyed the emails I've received and everyones uploads in the gallery - thank you to everyone who participated!!! I am really going to miss this class. I am so glad I joined in and took the daily photos - so many things have changed for us and I love that I captured so many of those changes.

Have a wonderful Sunday!

Daily Dose - Photo Day 29

Normal view of my purse: receipts sticking out of my wallet, keys, sunglasses, and a comb... normally there are various papers and lists sticking out too but it was getting out of hand and I cleaned my purse out a few days before this picture was taken.

Daily Dose - Photo Day 28

Years ago when I was pregnant with my first child,  I went to the library, got myself some books, and taught myself to crochet. It's a hobby - besides scrapbooking - that I really enjoy!

Daily Dose - Photo Day 27

I'm so happy that I got this shot when the automatic sprinklers were going off! Having a sprinkler system was far from a requirement when we were looking for houses but it's definitely one cool, added bonus!

Regular stuff
Drew is home sick today... sinus infection. I took him to the doctor this morning to get him meds but I have a feeling he'll be home again tomorrow. poor thing! In good Drew news... he has one very wiggly tooth (which completely grosses me out!) so I think we'll have a visit from the toothfairy sometime soon!
Happy Thursday!

Daily Dose - Photo Day 26

A dreaded chore... unloading the dishwasher! Today it wasn't so bad though because I got to unload some of our new, gorgeous, red dishes! We've had the same green set (which you can see a bowl of on the bottom right) since we got married so it nice to have a change.

Hope you are having a great week!

Daily Dose - Photo Day 25

I really won't see the effects of fall for a few more months... that doesn't stop me from decorating for the season though!

and look... you can see a bit of the new kitchen table and chairs that were delivered yesterday! :-)

Daily Dose - Photo Day 24

Our master bath is now huge! I love it! The blue color is compliments of the previous owners... I don't mind it but I know my husband would like it a bit darker. For now though, it'll do!

Daily Dose - Photo Day 23

A typical morning for me consists of coffee and the computer, after that, it's more coffee and cereal time!

Other Stuff
On Friday night Kevin and I bought a new kitchen table and chairs. I can't even tell you how excited I am!!! We've had the same crap table since college (which was a while ago!) so it will be wonderful to have something that's nice and new! We never bought a set at our previous house because we knew it wouldn't be our permanent home - and we didn't want to spend the money and then move only to find that what we bought wouldn't work at the new place... so we waited. The wait is just about over because it will be delivered on Tuesday... which won't get here soon enough. It is going to be perfect - I'm thrilled!!!

In other non-eventful and unexciting news... my sinuses are killing me. Between yesterday and today... ugh!

That's about it!

Happy Sunday!

Daily Dose - Photo Day 22

I need to buy some type of shelving unit for our movies and games to be stored in. At the old house they set on a built in hutch... at the new house, their home is curently the corner of the living room... at least they aren't in boxes anymore! lol!

Daily Dose - Photo Day 21

Daily Dose - Photo Day 20

This picture doesn't do our new closet justice... it's huge and I love it! We do have a few things to unpack - mostly books - but those boxes are nothing like it was in our old closet. It's so nice that we've got room to spare... for now at least!

Daily Dose - Photo Day 19

Our living room... well, I guess it is what most call a "family room" but I grew up calling the room where the tv was a "living room." I would like to add that I can't wait until we can get a real entertainment center! The room obviously still needs to be decorated... I haven't gotten very far! :-)

Daily Dose - Photo Day 18

We really haven't been in our new home long enough for me to figure out which room I go into the least, so I decided to pick which room I have been avoiding instead. This is the front room when you enter our house (I took the photo from the stairs). There are boxes to be unpacked still, broken down boxes that need to be taken to recyling, and a pile of stuff that needs to be given away. I'm avoiding it because now that all the major stuff is taken care of, I'm not very motivated to deal with the small stuff. soon... it'll get done soon...

Daily Dose - Photo Day 15

I had to adapt todays assignment a bit because my favorite snack of Popcorn and Diet Coke has not changed (that photo is in the classroom). This is a shot of our pantry, we keep kid snacks in the container and to the right of it... it's looking a little sad at the moment (obvioulsy some slacker mom needs to go to the store!).

Weekend Update
We are enjoying a nice visit with my Mom and Step-Dad. It is always a whirlwind (with lots of eating out!) when people come to visit us. The kids got to go swimming at their hotel today and now everyone is taking a break and resting.

Daily Dose Chat
I had so much fun at the chats yesterday for my class. Thank you to all who attended! If you are in the class and missed it, the transcripts will be available soon in the classroom.

Hope ya'll are having a great weekend!

Daily Dose - Photo Day 14

We've never really had a kitchen big enough to decorate so I'm looking forward to seeing what we can do with our new kitchen... no matter what there will be coffee involved!

Daily Dose - Photo Day 13

I'm showing my age a bit with today's photo... I use to listen to these records when I was a kid!

Creativity: A Daily Dose
Just a reminder, there are two chats scheduled tomorrow if you are taking this class. They are at 8am PST and 6pm PST. The chat room is in the classroom. If you need a time zone converter, you can find one here.

Today 's Agenda
I am cleaning like a fool! I did a quick, wipe down type of clean to the bathrooms when we moved into the house. Today I am doing the complete and thorough, scrubbing of all the crevices type of clean. Holy crap on a cracker Batman - it's a big undertaking! Did the people before us never clean? blech!

This Weekend
We've got company coming tomorrow! Our first guests to our new house... we're not completely unpacked but whatever! I'm still excited! I get to see my mama!

Okay - that's it for me!

Have a great Thursday!

Daily Dose - Photo Day 12

My new scrapbook room in progress... I'm getting everything unpacked and set up. Hopefully I'll be done soon... I'm working on it!

How much life has changed since my original picture for day 12 (if you are a student, this photo can be seen in the Daily Dose classroom). We were remodeling the bathroom in the old house, Kevin was putting the tiles up in the shower... and now those days are long gone!

Happy Wednesday!

Daily Dose - Photo Day 11

Our new mantel... current status: boring. I have yet to unpack all our picture frames and am no where close to getting them up on the walls so everything looks pretty plain. Drew put his turkey and armadillo up there before he left for school so he'd know right where they were when he got home. funny boy! Just about everything that is up there won't stay there, it's just where they got placed during the unpacking process.

Daily Dose - Photo Day 10

A place we all enjoy... and by all, I mean the picky 5 year old boy too! They've got chicken nuggets so all our basis are covered! good stuff!

Sunday, September 09, 2007

Daily Dose - Photo Day 9

Our new backyard is bigger and more landscaped than our old one, I love it! The people who lived here previously even built a nice little covered patio! That big thing that is leaning to the right of the patio is our picnic table... it obviously still needs to be assembled. You can see a nice little chunk of siding missing from the back of the house too. We had to take care of a plumbling problem and the siding guy can't come until Wedneday. Lovely view of the insulation though, lol! I'm digging the purple window too! It looks like they put some film on it to help block the sun... I love my lime green color but purple is pretty high up on my list of favorites still (go K-State!).

Have a wonderful Sunday!

Friday, September 07, 2007

Daily Dose - Photo Day 7

I'm still working on unpacking... all these books are at the foot of our bed (which we still can't find the ruffle for!).

I'm having so much fun with the daily photos... it's amazing to see how many things have changed for us, where we are at in our lives right now, and how many memories are sparked. There's still time to join in if you are looking for a creative push, today is the last day to register for Creativity: A Daily Dose (until 10pm PST).

Have a great weekend!

Daily Dose - Photo Day 6

I have XM Radio playing through DirecTV constantly... probably more than I do my mp3 player!

Have a great Thursday!

Daily Dose - Photo Day 5

I adore this green!

Daily Dose - Photo Day 4

I had to buy a second phone today! We only had the need for one phone in our small house but now with a bigger house and a second story, we need two!

Hope you're enjoying your Tuesday!
